Water temperature fluctuations up and down

Good afternoon all I have been the proud owner of a 2012 A5 black edition 2.0 tdi 177 now for a few weeks but I have noticed a few things about it

The water temp never just sits at a rock steady 90 it goes up and down and so far i have never even seen it reach 90 yet. I mostly do short journeys to work so I don't expect it to warm up on my commute but on the weekends I do journeys of about 40 miles mixed driving country lane and normal roads and it still does not reach 90

It has just had a new cambelt and waterpump so im sure this is not at fault and the heaters get nice and hot

Any suggestions?

Thank you

Classic symptom of thermostat failure mate. My first 3.0 TDI went in an identical way. Got my trusted independent specialist to replace it (although I'm sure it's DIYable) for ÂŁ160. Sweet is a nut after that. Rock steady at 90 deg C.

Thanks for the reply mate ! The thermostat was my first thought as well but after some searching I found people were saying these were very rare to fail, but ill take it to my trusted indy next weekend and get it looked at :)

Yeah, there's been quite a few on this forum suffered failure. I would hesitate to describe it as common, but not particularly uncommon either! Your Indy will be able to confirm.

I'm in the process of replacing my second Tstat in a year of ownership. I would try to scan for faults, could just be the sensor, but I would think the Tstat is failed open.

Cheers for the shout chaps, ill get her looked at hopefully will just be a sensor if not the stat will need changing !

Another question too my front seats seem to have a problem, when the handle is pulled to fold them forward so people can get in the back. The seats fold forward but don't slide forward, I have to manually slide the seat using the handle under the seat anybody have any ideas ?

Goodness, I am suprised to see so many thermostat failures. My A5 is always rock steady at 90 degrees and several past VW-group motors the same. I guess that the thermostat is a fairly cheap item???

Hi guys.

I have the same problem (i guess) in my A5 2013 177 TDI Multitronic. The temperature never reaches 90 if i only drive on country roads (80-90km/h) - i need to be driving on the highway with many rpm's before i can reach 90. Do you know what impact this will have on the car on the long road? Thanks a lot.

I guess not running at optimum temperature for extended periods may give rise to greater wear in the long run. I'd get it sorted... I did.
